Facts About New Hampshire

A small, mountainous, heavily forested state of the northeastern United States, New Hampshire is rich in the history and traditions that formed the nation. So firmly is independence rooted here that the state constitution asserts the right of revolution. Everything from family attractions and theme parks to the great outdoors awaits you throughout New Hampshire.

Among New Hampshire's assets are its rugged land and varied climate. The state is a year-round playground, and tourism contributes heavily to its economy. Some 1,300 lakes and ponds, fed by myriad mountain streams, beckon fishermen, swimmers, and boaters. Game abounds in the woods and meadows; mountains challenge climbers and skiers; and scenic roads and lanes attract cyclists and hikers. An appealing flavor of the past is preserved in the state's neat towns and villages.

New Hampshire is one of the New England states. It is bounded on the north by the Canadian province of Quebec. To the west is Vermont, separated by the Connecticut River for almost the entire length of the state. To the south is Massachusetts. In the southeast is a 13-mile (21-kilometer) stretch along the Atlantic Ocean, the shortest coastline of all the Atlantic states. To the east is Maine, separated in part by the Salmon Falls and Piscataqua rivers.

New Hampshire offers spectacular views and a wide range of activities and adventures. This state supplies year-round appeal with its wide variety of attractions. Whatever your leisure choice, New Hampshire has it all—hiking, biking, swimming, fishing and skiing to name but a few. South New Hampshire and the Atlantic Coast have majestic beaches, including the well-known Hampton Beach Area. For great mountain biking and skiing visit the White Mountains and Northern New Hampshire. The famous Mount Washington offers impressive views and many ski resorts. The New Hampshire Lakes region is one of the best locations for boating, fishing and Lake Tours, including Lake Winnipesauke.

Popular places to travel in New Hampshire:
  • Ruggles Mine : The Ruggles Mine burrows its way into Isinglass Mountain near the town of Grafton -- a huge, open pit, honeycombed along its edges with pitch-black side passages, supported by massive columns of pegmatite. It looks unsettlingly like where the lepers were sent in Ben Hur.
  • Dartmouth: Experience 18th century cooking demonstrations, see Fort militia soldiers drilling to defend against French and Indians, learn to spin wool, and many other activities that were a prt of every day colonial life.
  • Lakes: You'll find 273 lakes and ponds surrounded by affordable family attractions and resorts, lakefront cottages, watersports, dining, golf, beaches, antiquing and tax-free shopping and more!
  • Scenic Train Rides: Throughout the Lakes and White Mountain Regions of New Hampshire. The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad departs from Meredith or Weirs Beach in the Lakes Region and features a 2 hour ride along the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. The Hobo Railroad departs from Lincoln in the heart of the White Mountains and features a 1 & 1/4 hour ride in a natural, woodsy setting along the banks of the Pemigewasset River.
  • Waterfalls of the White Mountains: This natural curiosity fills the beholder with amazement and admiration." So Lucy Crawford, in her History of the White Mountains, reacted to the Flume. Ever since its discovery in 1808, the Flume has been a favorite tourist stopover. It has been celebrated by writers, artists, poets, photographers, postcard companies, and tour operators.
  • New England Tri-State Cycling : There are two sections of New England called "the tri-State area." One is the Tri-state area of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, which issues the Tri-state Lottery tickets. But before these lottery tickets, the term "tri-state" referred to the region described as follows: the Connecticut River Valley from Northampton, Massachusetts, to Bellows Falls, Vermont, including areas of northwest Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire, and southern Vermont.
  • Hiking the Presidentials: Leave the car at the bottom and scale the highest peaks in the northeast the old-fashioned way.
