Facts About Florida

Florida, state in the southeastern United States, bordering the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, which is an arm of the ocean. Florida, sometimes called the Peninsula State, consists of a large low-lying peninsula and, in the northwest, a strip of land known as the panhandle. It is a region of low, rolling hills, vast swamps and marshes, numerous lakes, and extensive forests. Superimposed on this varied pattern of physical features are the farmlands, urban areas, transportation routes, and other cultural features that have transformed Florida from largely a wilderness area into one of the fastest-growing states in the Union. Florida entered the Union on March 3, 1845, as the 27th state.

Tourism has been Florida's major source of income for many years. Although it initially attracted visitors from the Northeastern states during the winter months, it is now a year-round vacationland visited by tourists from every state, Latin America, and also from Canada and other foreign countries. The state's tourist attractions range from the vast expanse of the Everglades in the south to the historic cities of Saint Augustine and Pensacola in the north. The most popular attractions are the theme parks around Orlando and the many resort cities that rim the coast.

Florida's climate has been called the state's most valuable natural resource. Most of the state has a humid subtropical type of climate, but the southern tip of the peninsula has a more tropical climate. The climate attracts millions of tourists and permanent residents who seek sunshine and warmth all year, but particularly in winter. It is also important to growers of crops that are easily damaged by frost, such as citrus fruit and sugarcane.

Places to go in Florida:
  • Daytona Beach : Miles of hard-packed sand make this beach ideal for driving cars, four-wheelers, motorcycles, scooters and bicycles. In the summer and during spring break this beach is absolutely bustling with activity.
  • Miami: Miami is an exciting, vibrant city set within a lush, tropical landscape. This is a remarkable contrast to its origins of a remote fishing village barely over a century ago when the area was mostly mosquito-infested swamp. Today, Miami and Miami Beach are top destinations for business and travelers.
  • Orlando: Orlando - unquestionably the king of theme parks - a world of fantasy worlds. The city of Orlando is a prosperous modern Florida city in its own right with excellent museums and performing arts. However, it is the surrounding area where the real magic is found.
